It’s probably because they can identify with those people inside the container.
In my opinion, there are lots of unintelligent people, and most TV is also for unintelligent people, and in Big Brother, there are also only unintelligent people, so it’s perfect for them to sympathize.

It’s the same with talkshows. If you’re intelligent, you watch them occasionally to have a good laugh. If you’re unintelligent, you watch them daily and think it helps with your life because your life is similar to those strange individuals (hehe, wrong word actually) inside the TV.

There’s usually an active chat community while watching. It’s not so much the viewing of them sitting and doing nothing all day as it is coming back each season and finding some old friends in the chat rooms.

However, if you are referring to a premium cable channel where this is not an option. No. I don’t get it either.

They should just combine big brother and survivor and make “big survivor” with the contestants being the 80′s band, survivor.

Voyeurism is a fairly basic attraction. Take Hitchcock’s “Rear Window” in 1954 (or it’s retarded cousin, Disturbia). People like to watch people. But 24/7 is a bit over the top, yeah.
