I’ve been testing to get some old software to work on my Vista operating system, and found couple of useful links:
- How to Run an Older Program in Windows XP and Vista (right click software and use ‘compatibility’ mode)
- Install Virtual PC (really nice system to run Windows XP under Vista, check it out).
Might come handy when testing older stuff with Vista.
GOG.com uses DosBox to run those games, performance can be little iffy. I bought my copy of Stonekeep from there even though I have boxed copy (with that cool hologram skeleton). I got it running on my own before but GOG provided my with nice installer and pre-configured settings for DosBox enviroment. So it all works.
Gog (http://www.gog.com) sells old games for very cheap, and they are supposedly compatible with XP and Vista. I haven’t tried them myself though.
The problem with MSVPC is that the emulated graphics card sucks, not exactly good for testing games…
