It’s Not About The Price

After seeing 99 votes to the poll about game pricing, I must say that I’m pretty amazed about the results. Out of 99 voters, 5 would pay nothing, but 4 would pay more than $200 for a game (that’s pretty amazing if you think of this a bit).

83 out of 99 would pay $20 or more for a solid fun game.

Pretty darn interesting.

  1. I have both sets of results on-screen at once. It interesting how what people SAY they will pay is not actually what they have paid. It turns out that people have in fact paid MORE than they said they would, which is very interesting.

  2. There’s several factors:
    – there’s very different games and game platforms
    – the audience is “game developers” (who perhaps might pay more than gamers)
    – saying and actually paying are two different things.
    – people can throw random votes
    – Don’t know if this poll system handles multiple votes from one person

    And probably some more.

    Let’s see what people vote here:

  3. I think, you should also have in mind, that most of the readers of your blog might be someone who creates games himself or is going towards that. So it might be that “normal” players would provide different results.

  4. One thing is sure in my mind: I would much rather pay for my favorite games than have to watch ads placed in them. Ads can do for a game that I only want to try once for a short time but I have a low tolerancy for them otherwise.

  5. Again – I’m not sure the value of the poll.

    If you were to show me Mass Effect back in 1981, and asked, “How much would you pay for this?” – well, money would have been no object. (Of course, I was a kid back then, so I had no money). It would be so amazingly, mind-blowingly beyond everything else out there that people would be willing to spend tens of thousands (in 1981 dollars) to buy the game. Woot.

    But today – meh – I wasn’t willing to pay full price for it. I waited until I could get it at a discount. Too many competing games. The price is limited to what the market will allow. The problem is, you are never quite positive what the market will allow. But it’s largely dictated by what the competition is doing.
